Gunn Auto Tech Events: AutoX School 2002

6 Gunn Auto Tech students, along with a couple of their parents, attended the Autocross Driving School at the Marina Airport in Monterey on Saturday, February 16th. Students were taught basic steering, braking, and throttle application while driving their own cars through a maze-like course of rubber traffic cones. Directions were reversed so counter clockwise driving could be experienced as well. Two individual courses were joined at midday so the drivers could try a slalom and an assortment of turns with varying degrees of difficulty. As a final task, drivers ran the course while being timed from starting line to finish line. All the Gunn students improved dramatically.

The end of the day was reserved for instructors to show students how it was properly done. Mr. Camicia took everyone of his students for an eye opening drive in their respective cars. The most popular ride of the day (and crowd favorite) had to be when he took 5 students at once, all helmeted and buckled into Shane Templeman's BMW sedan for a spectacular run through the cones. Mrs. Camicia took Mark Hartford's Dad and several students for runs in the test car also, demonstrating the reason for her 3 National Championships. The weather held up just long enough for us to pack up and head north as the sun set. A good time was had by all.

Chris Szutu navigates the clockwise oval while his instructor observes from the passenger seat. His Mazda 626 was equipped with an automatic transmission, but this didn't stop him from posting some impressive times!
Mark Childress tries the lane change maneuver in his Infinity sedan while a skydiver gets ready for touchdown in the background. Mark learned a great deal about car control after an early morning spin.
Both Malcolm Brown and Ryan Johnson shared the Gunn Auto Test Car for their time behind the wheel at the driver's school. The car worked flawlessly despite double duty.
Shane Templeman used this BMW with a manual transmission for his driving chores.
